Although twelve-year-old Amen constantly draws unwanted attention from the people of small-town Kilcock because of her eyes, life could not be more normal for her and her twin sister, Iska. Until a fateful day, when Amen experiences a life-changing event that she and Iska desperately need to share with the only person they trust: their mother, Aré. But things go from bad to unimaginable when they arrive home to find Aré’s lifeless body.

With no other living relatives, Amen and Iska are taken into an orphanage run by Aré’s best friend, Aunt Nikki. There, the twins are haunted, for years, by their mother’s untimely death; however, just when it seems like they are finally ready to move on, a piece of news from Aunt Nikki starts a chain reaction of events that forces Amen and Iska to journey to foreign lands in search of answers, while trying to keep themselves and the people closest to them from getting killed.
